California REAL ID documents: prepare identity and residency proof
For a California REAL ID application, use DMV’s checklist to choose one eligible identity document and two different printed proofs of California residency. Prepare any name-change evidence and bring the required documents to DMV; uploaded images do not eliminate the office visit.
REAL ID document requirements come from the issuing state. This guide is for California. California DMV requires proof of identity, California residency and a DMV visit; the application also asks for your Social Security number, with possible exceptions.
Build the document set
| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| One eligible identity document | Full name and date of birth; use DMV’s accepted-document list |
| Any legal name changes | Evidence linking the identity document to your current full name |
| Two different printed residency records | Your first and last name and the same California mailing address as the application |
An eligible identity document might be a valid U.S. passport or an original or certified U.S. birth certificate. The DMV checklist lists other categories and exceptions; select the actual document you hold.
Check the evidence before your visit
- Complete the checklist for your identity document and name history.
- Choose two different accepted residency records, such as an eligible utility bill and bank record. Print them.
- Compare names and addresses across the records and application. Use the checklist’s specific rules for a P.O. box or a tracing document if needed.
- Follow DMV’s application and visit instructions with the required documents ready.
Keep the phone copy in its place
A personal scan can help you check which document you selected. It does not turn an uncertified birth-record photocopy into a certified certificate, or turn an electronic residency file into the printed document DMV requests.
Keep the complete files, and use plain filenames such as document type and date without inserting identity numbers. Open any scanned page to confirm that corners, names and addresses remain readable.
For a missing source document, the U.S. replacement guide identifies the responsible issuer. For keeping personal scans, see safe document storage. Confirm DMV’s requirements before making edits to any application copy.
