Malta marriage certificate: choose the copy and order it

Order an existing registered Malta marriage certificate through Identità’s official certificate portal or Public Registry service. Confirm whether the recipient needs a full certificate, an extract or an annotated record before choosing delivery and any overseas-use options.

Ordering a certificate is different from registering a marriage or arranging a ceremony. The Public Registry’s service issues copies of registered civil-status acts. If the event has only just been notified, wait for confirmation that registration is complete before ordering.

Choose the certificate

What the recipient needsWhat to check
Main details of the actWhether an extract is sufficient
Complete act detailsFull certificate
Proof of separation, divorce or annulmentFull marriage certificate with the relevant annotation
Use by an authority abroadRequested format, translation aid and any authentication requirements

The certificate-type page explains that some annotated records are issued only in full format. Ask the recipient before choosing a cheaper or shorter copy.

Prepare and place the order

  1. Open the official marriage-certificate application from the certificate portal.
  2. Gather both spouses' names, surnames at birth and available identity-card details, plus the place and date of marriage.
  3. Select the required certificate type and number of copies. Review the details before checkout.
  4. Check the overseas-use options against the destination authority’s requirements; do not select an apostille merely by habit.
  5. Choose postal delivery or collection and keep the order reference.

Keep the issued version intact

The portal supports delivery abroad as well as collection in Malta or Gozo. Its public-document guidance explains the EU framework and multilingual standard forms. Check that your document, use and receiving authority fall within the relevant framework rather than assuming every foreign recipient has identical requirements.

Retain the issued certificate and any accompanying translation or authentication separately. A phone scan is a personal reference copy, not a newly issued certificate. Do not crop out annotations that explain the current record.

For another civil-status task, see ordering a Malta birth certificate. Keep copy requests distinct from passport renewal documents.

Questions about Malta marriage certificates

Does ordering a certificate register the marriage?

No. The portal orders existing registered civil-status records. Complete any necessary registration first.

Which copy shows a divorce or annulment annotation?

The official marriage application directs applicants needing that proof to a full certificate with the relevant annotation.

Does a personal PDF replace an issued certificate abroad?

Ask the receiving authority for its accepted format and any translation or authentication requirements. A personal scan does not acquire official status through conversion.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
