Maltese passport renewal: documents to prepare for your visit

For an adult Maltese passport renewal, prepare Form A, your original valid Maltese ID card, a copy of both sides and your previous passport. Attend the Passport Office for the required live biometrics, and check the additional instructions if you live abroad or cannot present the usual documents.

This checklist is for a Maltese citizen aged 18 or over renewing a passport. Children's applications, first passports and missing or damaged passports have different requirements. Select your actual category before completing the form.

Pack the standard adult renewal documents

Identità's adult renewal page lists the following:

ItemPreparation
Form AComplete sections 1, 2, 5 and 9
Maltese ID cardTake the original valid card
ID card copyPrepare front and back
Previous passportPack the passport itself

Compare the form's name and particulars with your documents before the visit. Keep the paper copy of the ID card separate from the original so that both are ready when requested. An image on your phone can help you organise the paperwork, but does not replace the original card on the checklist.

Book the visit and prepare for live biometrics

The official passport FAQ recommends booking through its linked Passport Office booking service to reduce waiting. Booking is separate from submitting the renewal. Keep the confirmation and check the selected office before travelling, especially if you could attend in Malta or Gozo.

Adult renewal involves a live facial image, fingerprints and signature at the office. A saved passport portrait or photo of your signature is not a way to complete that capture remotely. Do not assume that downloading Form A means you can finish the adult application online.

Before submitting, review the form for blank sections that apply to your circumstances. If a detail has changed, ask which supporting evidence the Passport Office needs. Do not correct the contents of a passport scan to make it resemble a newly issued document.

Living abroad or missing the usual identification?

Read both the adult renewal page and the FAQ for this branch. The renewal page asks applicants living abroad without a valid Maltese ID card for an endorsed passport photo and a recommender's completion of section 7. The FAQ states the section 7 requirement more broadly for applicants living abroad.

If you live abroad, confirm the section 7 requirement with Identità before obtaining signatures or attending. The FAQ describes a recommender who is a Maltese citizen living in Malta, holds a university degree and has known the applicant for at least two years. Use the current form and official instructions for the required endorsement and professional details.

An overseas application through a Maltese embassy or consulate has its own arrangements. Tell the office which country you live in and what original documents you hold; a standard local-renewal checklist does not settle an overseas exception.

If the ID card itself is lost, use the Maltese identity card replacement guide and ask the Passport Office how your renewal should proceed. Do not assume that a police report or temporary form automatically replaces the valid ID requested for the passport application.

Keep collection separate from the appointment

Check Identità for current fees and processing information. A general completion estimate does not confirm your passport is ready. Keep any instructions received after submission and confirm the collection arrangement before making a second trip.

The adult renewal page requires in-person collection with original valid identification and says fingerprints are checked again. The FAQ also notes that each renewal produces a new passport number. After collection, check the new document's particulars and update your personal reference record rather than reusing the old number from habit.

Final visit checklist

  • The application category is an adult renewal.
  • Form A's applicable sections are complete.
  • The original valid ID card and its front-and-back copy are packed.
  • The previous passport is ready.
  • Any overseas or recommender question has been resolved.
  • The appointment office and subsequent collection instructions are clear.

Afterwards, mark an older stored passport copy as superseded. Dokus can keep a personal copy and your visit records organised, but cannot renew the passport, capture the official biometrics or replace the documents the office asks you to present.

Maltese passport renewal questions

Can I renew an adult Maltese passport entirely online?

No. The official instructions require attendance for live biometrics. Downloading the form or booking a visit does not complete the application.

Do I need a separate copy of the ID card?

The adult renewal page lists a copy of both sides as well as the original valid Maltese ID card. Prepare both unless the Passport Office gives instructions specific to your case.

Is section 7 required if I live abroad?

The FAQ includes applicants living abroad in the section 7 requirement, while the renewal page describes the branch without a valid Maltese ID card. Confirm your situation with Identità before the visit.

My documents used to be all scattered through my gallery, I managed to organize them all. I personally like the watermark feature… I used it a lot while traveling, it makes sharing IDs much safer… it stamps a copy with the name of the company you are sharing with (say, an AirBnb or a car rental). It’s still a bit rough around the edges but it’s a new app and the dev seems to be working on it. Price is alright given it’s a one time payment.. one less subscription!
